How is the ROP funded?

Presently, the ROP receives a block grant from the state to operate its programs. The block grant funding system was enacted as a result of SBX34 due to the state's fiscal crises and reduced ROP funding 21%. Lottery dollars are also allocated based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA) and used to purchase new equipment and materials. No federal funds are included in the ROP operational revenues. This ROP does not charge tuition; however, students may be required to purchase certain materials and books which they can keep. Unless specifically noted otherwise, students will be responsible for providing their own transportation to class locations including community classroom sites.

Who attends ROP classes?

Depending on the policies of the member district, any high school student over 16 or adult may attend an ROP class offered in any district served by our ROP. To maintain the original concept of ROP, high school students receive priority in enrolling in any class; Recent legislation limits adult enrollment. Please chack class schedule to make sure enrollment is open to adults.

Who are the ROP instructors?

ROP instructors are specialists from business and industry chosen for their expertise and experience in their particular subject field. Each instructor is credentialed by the California Teaching Commission and is required to complete designated teaching methodology classes.

Where are the ROP classes offered?

ROP classes are offered either on local campuses and/or in local businesses where potential employment actually exists. Community facilities and equipment are utilized under formal agreements signed by the business representative and the County Superintendent of Schools to provide a combination of school site and work site learning.

When are the ROP classes offered?

Most ROP classes are offered during the day to meet the needs of high school students, adults and our participating businesses. Some classes are offered in the evening to accommodate working adults.

Can school credit be earned for taking ROP classes?

High school students who satisfactorily complete the course requirements can be granted credit according to local district policies. ROP students completing a course receive a certificate of completion, which is signed by the instructor. In addition, many classes are articulated with local community colleges.

What is meant by Articulated Classes?

Articulation is an agreement between the ROP and community colleges or four-year colleges which allows a student to receive some type of credit towards a college course for competencies learned in the ROP courses.

Does the ROP offer guidance and counseling services?

The San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools ROP offers a variety of services to potential and enrolled ROP students. These support services include career and educational guidance, career assessment, career planning assistance, educational and occupational information and job search placement assistance.

Are employers involved with the ROP?

Employers support the ROP in a variety of ways. Through their participation on advisory committees, business leaders assist in verifying local labor market demand, determining curriculum content, providing expert consultants and recommending qualified instructors. In addition, employers provide facilities, equipment, and promote student job placement.
